10- Freedom and Information Act
Life Without the Freedom of Information Act
The Freedom of Information Act is a law that calls for disclosure of previously hidden information. With this law, it is possible for citizens to request information from federal agencies which promotes transparency in our society. The freedom of information act is beneficial to us in many ways, I mentioned transparency, it holds our government accountable for their actions, and it is a valuable resource for our journalist and media outlets to get factual information.
Usually in these briefs, I would outline what the topic is and how it effects us, but I want try to imagine what life would be like without the Freedom and Information Act. I think sometimes it can be easier to understand something if you can look at things from a different perspective.
The Dangers of No Freedom of Information
Imagine a world with no access to statistical data and studies. This Could lead to inaccurate information being reported, doctored statistics and study data, and challenge us in solving problems in our society.
Imagine a world with no access to historical information, and you will see a lot of repeating problems and issues because of a limited understanding of past events and a lack of informed citizens when it comes to their history.
Imagine a world with no access to financial records, this would obscure government agency spending and lead to a lot of money mismanagement and corruption.
Imagine a world with no access to council meeting minutes, this would be a world where the public has no idea of the conversations and decisions made by their government behind closed doors.
Imagine a world without access to government policies and regulations. This would be a very uneducated society, because nobody would be sure of the laws, it would lead to a lot of confusion, and potential abuse of power.
Imagine a world with no access to contracts and agreements, this would lead to potential conflicts, illegal deals and corruption within business and governments.
This is definitely not a world that I would want to live in, I’m very grateful that we have the access to valuable information that helps us stay informed and protected in our nation. For more information about the freedom and information act this is a link to their website.
